Giveaway–Beyond the Night by Joss Ware

**Please note: the giveaway is now closed.  Winner will be announced soon.

As I posted a couple weeks ago, in March I’ll be doing a book signing in Chicago with several other authors, including Joss Ware (who also writes as Colleen Gleason). Joss Ware’s first book, Beyond the Night, releases January 12th.

A man with no future…

When Dr. Elliott Drake wakes from a mysterious fifty-year sleep, the world as he knew it is gone. Cities are now desolate, and civilization is controlled by deadly immortals. Stranger still is Elliott’s extraordinary new “gift” – he has the power to heal, but it comes with fatal consequences.

A woman with a past. . .

Jade barely escaped the immortals and is now hell-bent on revenge. She trusts no one… until Elliott. His piercing gaze and tempting touch shatter her defenses, but the handsome doctor seems to have dangerous secrets of his own. Is it safe to trust him with her heart?

If they are to survive in this dark new world, Jade and Elliott must work together to fight the forces that takes them beyond danger.

Beyond desire.
Beyond the night.

I hate to brag, but I’ve read Beyond the Night and I LOVED it.  Joss describes the series as HEROES meets LOST meets I AM LEGEND. With zombies. And romance. In a post-apocalyptic setting.  Ha–if I had a dime every time I read that. . . I’d have, um, a dime.

Seriously, Beyond the Night is fantastic.  The world building is incredible, the romance is sizzling, and the story is original and captivating.  There’s a scene in an abandoned shopping mall that. . .  well, I won’t give it away, but let’s just say I was at the edge of my seat.  This is definitely one of those books you’ll stay up late to finish because you won’t want to put it down.  I can’t wait to get my hands on the next book in the series.

Sold yet?  Well, it’s somebody’s lucky week, because Joss has generously donated a signed copy of Beyond the Night as a giveaway to one of you.  And she’s going to try to drop by if anyone has any questions about the book or the series.  One random commenter will win the signed copy of Beyond the Night–all you have to do is leave a question for Joss, or tell us what hooks you into a new series, or just say how excited you are to check out this book.  The contest will be open until 10pm CST on Sunday, January 10th.

And be sure to check out the other contest I’m running, where I’m giving away a $25 book store gift card to one random person who correctly identifies where the photograph at the top of this blog was taken.  You can enter the contest here.

Happy reading!

I love character driven books- I can get into just about any plot al long as I’m loving the characters. (Good or Bad) My question- how id you come you up with this plot idea?

  2. Barbara Elness says:

This book sounds fantastic. I’ve always loved those books with an “end of the world as we know it” type setting, where the hero / heroine have to learn to survive in a different world. I’ll be very interested to read this book and learn just how Joss explains the “fifty year sleep” and the healing ability of Elliott, and where the immortals came from, etc.

  3. Jane says:

Congrats on the upcoming release. I really enjoyed your Gardella Vampire Chronicles and look forward to reading your new series writing as Joss.

  4. Edna says:

Sounds intriguing! I usually get into new series if I heard wind of it down the grapevine. For example one of my favorite authors might mention it, a friend recommends it, or readers with similar tastes as mine are buzzing around forums talking about the series. I get interested and look it up for myself and if the summary catches my interest, then I’ll give it a shot.

  5. Joder says:

This book sounds super good! What hooks me for a series are the character’s connections to one another. Do their lives make me invested in what happens to them in the future. And if a bunch of hot guys are involved then I’m so there.

  6. Judi L says:

What did you do before you becam a writer?
Main things that make me start or chose a new author or series: back cover book blurb and a hot cover. Also since Twitter, if I see alot of buzz about a book or author I have definitely been checking them out and ordering (way to many new books).

  7. Natasha A. says:

I do so love discovering new authors! Especially brand new ones where I don’t have a big back list to read through 😀 Although, I am sure that will change Joss! Where did the idea for this book come from? Will this be a series, or is it standalone?

  8. Lindsay says:

I became interested in Joss Ware’s new book when I saw she was coming to a book store near me for a book signing. I have a book she wrote as Colleen Gleason, and I liked the book. I tought I would enjoy “Beyond the Night”, since I have liked her as an author in the past.

  9. Jennifer M. says:

The ringing endorsement is enough to want me to read this book. But the fact that it has such a unique premise really adds to my interest. Plus, the doc sounds very funny & sexy based on the excerpt I read.

  10. Karen W. says:

I can’t even begin to tell you how excited I am about this book! I love Joss’s writing (Colleen Gleason) & love fantasy, especially post-apocalyptic stories. And zombies. Gotta love that. 🙂

  11. Patti says:

I had no idea Colleen Gleason was also Joss Ware! I loved the Gardellas, I’m going to have to check out her backlist, as well as this one…Congratulations to Ms. Ware on her release! And thanks to you both for the opportunity to win this book!

  12. Miranda says:

I get hooked on a new series with character development. The deeper the character the more I get sucked in… leave a lot of big ragged loose ends and I want to read the next book!

  13. Joss Ware says:

Hi everyone! Thanks for the enthusiasm. This book was so much fun to write–a nice change from female vampire hunters in Regency times. 😉

Someone asked about my favorite scene in the book…I think it’s a scene where they are in a shopping mall. Or, at least, what’s left of one. 🙂

Someone else asked about whether this is going to be a series, and yes indeed it is. In fact, the next two books are being released back to back in a triple-play: Jan, Feb, March…so watch for more!

The idea for this book came from an old Clive Cussler novel about a group of people trying to destroy the earth so they could rebuild it. I thought about what would happen if they succeeded…and built my series around the world, fifty years later.

Thank you for all the congratulations! I hope those of you who get the chance to read it will enjoy it!

  14. Elizabeth says:

Is “Beyond the Night” more of a straight romance when compared to the Gardella Chronicles? I’m looking forward to reading it!

  15. Erin T says:

I am big reader of blurbs. If I read a blurb either online or on the backs of books at the bookstore, I am either hooked or I am not. As far as series go, I love them! My favorite part of a series is being able to go back and revisit the characters you loved in previous books. I know there have been plenty of books where I haven’t wanted the stories to end, series give you that chance to take a peek at what the couple’s lives are like after books end. This series sounds fantastic! and I am psyched that the books are released back to back to back 🙂 I won’t have to wait a year or more to read the next book and that’s a BIG PLUS for me!

  16. cyndi welding says:

Great characters and a well developed plot/background are what hooks me. Once I started reading Jessica Andersen’s Night Keepers I couldn’t put it down.

  17. KiaJG says:

Usually it takes and original plot and intriguing characters to draw me into reading a new series and all that holds true here, but in this case, it is also knowing this author. I am a huge fan of Joss Ware’s (Colleen Gleason’s) work. The Gardella Vampire Chronicles are a personal favorite, and I am really looking forward to reading this new series!

  18. Joss Ware | Colleen Gleason says:

For those curious minds…The Envy Chronicles are more straight romance, meaning there is a happy ending at the end of each book. Over-arching plots with other heroes and heroines are developed, but unlike the Gardellas, there are one main hero and heroine per book. 🙂

Nice to “see” some familiar “faces” here!

  19. Crystal B. says:

Beyond the Night sounds great. What hooks me into a new series is interesting characters, good world building and a plot that engrosses me from page one.

  20. Marjana kaly says:

I have questions for Joss, what are you currently working on or what’s your next big project?

  21. Jackie B. says:

Are you kidding me if the idea came out of something started percolating by Clive Cussler it has to be dynamic adventure, romance and intrigue and since the books are being released back to back what a great way to keep the reader fresh in the story lines….
New series hook me when keep reading fantastic reviews written by people like you who have read the book. They also are going to hook me if have already read other work by the author and in this case have read Colleen Gleason’s Gardella books and am looking forward to trying something new.
Thanks to you both Julie and Joss for the book drawing for us lucky fans..

  22. Joss Ware | Colleen Gleason says:

Marjana, I’m currently working on the fourth Envy book (to be released in 2011) and also a new historical vampire series unrelated to the Gardellas (also to be released in 2011).

Thanks, Jackie, and all!! Hope you enjoy!

PS I love Clive Cussler’s old books…they are so fascinating and far-fetched…yet in a good way. Anyone see Matthew McConaughey as Dirk Pitt in SAHARA? Only movie I ever liked Matthew Mc in.

  23. GSM says:

What will hook me onto this series is Colleen Gleason herself. I loved the Gardella Vampire Chronicles and look forward to reading this next series from her creative pen.

  24. Sarah Coulsey says:

This sounds like a great plot. I love books like this. I love my chances to escape the world and read. I have two small children, so my free time is limited. Sitting down with a good book is my favorite thing to do.

  25. maered says:

I think great characters (obviously) and great world building are essentials when hooking me on a new series. This looks like it has all the elements. Congrats!

  26. Terri says:

Congrats on the upcoming release and I love the cover!

For me to try out a new series it would have to have well written characters and plot. If it’s an author I love I will read whatever genre they write in.

    Thanks for the giveaway!

  27. Lariel says:

If also open for Non-US, so I’m in!

Really looking forward to read that book.. Already preordered my copy <3

The story sounds so interesting! 🙂

  28. Joy says:

What hooks me on a book? The blurb is important, of course, but I generally look at a few pages to get a flavor of the writing styles so the beginning few pages must interest me. I confess that I do tend to pick up books with interesting covers to read the blurb on–sigh, I know it is shallow to go by appearences but, ….

  29. kristin says:

Very excited to read this series(ooh, and to know there is another one in the series in 2011…yahoo)!

You know I LOVED The Gardella Vampire Chronicles…I am really anxious to read something different from you, too.

  30. kara c says:

This book sounds unlike any I usually read, and that fascinates me!
You said this is the beginnning of a series. Will each book’s main characters make an appearance in all the books?
(BTW, I love the cover. Did you get any input in that?)

  31. Julia M. says:

I really enjoy reading apocolyptic fiction, but it’s often so distant from the characters. I’m looking to your new book because I want less of a disconnect, and more of a character-driven story in a fantastically built world. 🙂 Too much to ask? Nah. 🙂
